TV Licensing

It is common for students to think they won't need to buy a television licence, but this is not the case! YOU WILL NEED ONE!

So how does this work for student accomodation?

Well, halls of residence have communal areas that are licenced by the hall, but each individual room is classed as a separate dwelling and so needs its own licence.  If you're living in a shared house  under a multiple-occupancy tenancy then only one licence is needed for the whole property. Basically if each tenant has a different address (i.e. flat/ room number) then tenants would need their own licence.

What happens when I leave my accomodation?

Remember, your licence is for the property and not you  so when you move house you need to update your details or the licence will not be valid.

If you are going home and no longer need your licence did you know you could get a refund? You could be entitled to a refund if you have 3 full months unused on your licence. For example; if you brought  your licence in October and will be home during July, August and September, you ncould be entitled for a refund for those unused months.

If you think that might be you,you can check by calling  0844 800 6734.

What happens if I get caught without a licence

If you use television receiving equipment without a valid licence you could be faced with;

  • PROSECUTION
  • £1000 FINE
  • LIABILITY FOR COURT COSTS
  • YOU WOULD HAVE TO BUY A LICENCE

A licence for black & white receiving equipment costs £47 and for colour it's £139.50. It may sound like a lot of money but when you think of what you would have to pay if you were caught without a licence, is it really worth the risk?

If you would like further information on licences and how to pay you can call; 0844 800 6734, or visit www.tvlicensing.co.uk
