Student Volunteering Week 2012

Every year DSU Volunteering gets involved in Student Volunteering Week, this is where students up and down the country volunteer their time to numerous projects to make a difference! This year it took place from Saturday 18th February – Sunday 26th February 2012.

Here is what we got up to!...

Saturday 18th February
Football Tournament at Goals Soccer Centre
The 5-a-side tournament took place to raise money for the children’s charity Sparks, responsible for research into serious conditions affecting the health of babies, children and mothers-to-be. Lot’s of fun was had on the day despite the terrible wet weather with over £150 was raised for the charity!

Monday 20th February
Big Coffee Break for Coping with Cancer
Coping with Cancer is a local charity that provides practical and emotional support to anyone affected by cancer. We raised money and awareness for the charity by hosting a BIG Coffee Break at DSU.

Tuesday 21st February
Garden Project at Willowbrook Primary School
Willowbrook Primary school is just outside the city centre and as part of Student Volunteering Week we travelled across there to renovate the outdoor garden area for their pupils!

Tuesday 21st February
Befriending Day at Age Concern Leicester
The DSU Volunteering Committee headed to Age Concern in the city centre to get to know some of their service users a little bit more. They took the Nintendo Wii with them along with other games and fun activities.

Wednesday 22nd February
Mural Painting at Coram Adoption
We helped spruce up the Coram Adoption Centre where they recruit, train and prepare people to adopt children from the care system. Children designed the murals which we then enlarged and painted onto four 1m square panels.

Thursday 23rd February
SECS Clinic Project
The SECS Clinic volunteers promoted the work of the clinic to students in the Campus Centre, they also found out what students REALLY know about sexual health.

Friday 24th February
Arts & Crafts Day at the Children’s Hospital School
The Children’s Hospital School supports children with their education in hospital
and at home throughout Leicester and Leicestershire. We visited our friends at the school based in the Leicester Royal Infirmary where we kept the children busy with lots of arts & crafts activities.

Saturday 25th February
DSU Sleepout 3
A group of DSU volunteers did something unforgettable when they spent the night outside the campus centre building. They were raising awareness of homelessness and in particular local charity Action Homeless. Every participant was sponsored to take part and on the night they collected lots of donations from passers by. The volunteers look set to raise well over £1000 for Action Homeless!
