What is the Associate Member / Life Members scheme?

Former DMU students may submit an application to become an Associate Member or Life Member of the Students’ Union. This application cannot be made until they have completed their studies at DMU.

Associate Membership is available on an annual basis. There are two levels to the Associate Memberships: former students that require access to the Union facilities and the following individuals who have not studied at De Montfort University:

· All members of the academic and non-academic staff of the University (during their employment with the University)

· Retired members of academic or non-academic staff of the University (who have retired whilst in the service of the University)

· All employees of De Montfort Students’ Union (during the period of their employment)

· Retired employees of De Montfort Students’ Union (who retired whilst in the service of the Students’ Union)

Associate Membership is NOT open to members of general public or to students or graduates at other institutions.

Life Members receive their membership for life. This is only available to former DMU students.

What are the benefits?

Students participating in this scheme are able to participate in Union activities can:

· attend social events held within the Students’ Union

· get involved with the Sports and Societies however they would not be able to play in BUCS fixtures

· Associate Membership / Life Membership does not entitle the holder to participate in democratic processes although they would be able to attend the Annual General Meeting as an observer

· register to participate in any of the DSU Volunteering activities throughout the year· contribute to the Demon Media which includes the newspaper, radio and television station

· get involved in any of the StandOut activities, previous sessions have included British Sign Language Level 1, self defence, salsa, first aid and many more.  

How much does it cost to be involved?

Associate Membership is valid for 1 year and costs £10. Life membership costs £20.

What will I receive?

You will receive your membership card – this will vary in colour depending on which scheme you are applying for. If you provide us with your contact details, you will also receive information about Students’ Union opportunities that we think you would be interested in.

If you provide us with your date of birth details, you can be invited to celebrate your birthday with a selection of friends at the Union for free - please note this is subject to availability.

Terms and conditions

There are several terms and conditions regarding this membership scheme, as outlined in the Students’ Union constitution. These are:

· Associate membership is valid for one academic year only and expires on the date shown on the car. However any application made after 31 March in any year will mean the card is valid until the end of the following academic year.

· Associate members may take part in its educational, social, sporting and cultural activities and enjoy its facilities

· Associate membership does not guarantee entry to the Union building.· Associate members do not have the right to sign in guests

· Associate members are eligible to join all registered clubs and societies of the Union.

· Associate membership does not give the holder voting rights, hold office in clubs and societies, the right to stand for an elected position or the right to use University facilities.

· De Montfort University status only applies to students having studied here from 1987.

· Associate membership may be suspended by the Executive Committee or Student Council and withdrawn at any time by Student Council upon recommendation from an Executive Officer or Disciplinary Committee.

Associate Membership / Life Membership does NOT entitle the user to have access to the Library or discounts provided through the NUS card.

The Careers Service at DMU is available to all graduates for life, this is in no way connected to this membership scheme.

Complete and return the appropriate form, along with the correct payment of either £10 (Associate membership) or £20 (Life membership) and two passport sized photographs, to:

Cheques should be made payable to DMU Students’ Union Ltd.
