DSU is passionate about the environment and encourages you students to help save your planet. If you’re interested in getting involved with campaigns on the environment and having your say and input to ensure the Union, the University and the community is as environmentally friendly as possible then you can email Jane Wells, Vice President Welfare, at jwells02@dmu.ac.uk or visit her in the Students' Union.
For 2009-10 the Students' Union is working towards achieving Bronze status in the Sound Environmental Impact Awards. This is an accreditation scheme for environmental best practice in Student unions across the country which measures their performance which results in awards.
DSU held an environmental campaign on 12-16 October 2009. This was evidentially to engage students making them aware how they can do their bit to save the planet.
In 2010, Jane and a group of the student volunteers are hoping to hold a recycle your clothes ‘Fashion Show’. If you are interested in getting involved with this please contact jwells02@dmu.ac.uk
By recycling many products this uses less energy and therefore less carbon. By living in a shared student house encourage your house mates and remind them to not to put the empty bottles of wine in the bin, put notes on the fridge as a visual reminder.
Recycling doesn’t just happen in the kitchen for example shampoo bottles can be recycled as well.
We throw away 6.7 million tonnes of food waste every year that could have been eaten. Be practical about the quantities of what you buy - reduce your portions, plan your meal and eat what’s about to go off.
