SEXUAL HEALTH AND RESPONSIBILITY POLICY
This Union Notes
- Sexual health should be a key concern for DMU students.
- Student club nights are often promoted using sexual themes.
- Student club nights often use sexual themes to promote alcohol.
- STI’s (Sexually transmitted infections) are becoming increasingly common in society.
- STI’s often have no physical symptoms.
- There are approximately 8000 people in the UK newly diagnosed with HIV in 2005, increasing the number of people in the UK living with HIV to an estimated 70000.
- There was a 5% increase in the number of people diagnosed with Chlamydia in 2005 (109,832 new cases), with the highest rates of infection and highest increases in diagnoses were seen for both sexes in the 16 to 24 age group.
- Currently there are no formalised links with statutory and voluntary health agencies with DSU.
This Union believes
- There should be a counterbalance between promotion and themes of a sexual nature and sexual health information at DSU.
- Free condoms should be available from DSU club nights and DSU affiliates should be encouraged to offer the same.
- Students should be aware of their sexual health responsibilities and behave in a sexually responsible manner.
- Uptake of STI screening should be higher amongst the student population.
- The government should have a strong national sexual health campaign.
- The Students’ Union should meet regularly with local health authorities and organisations to ensure that the Students’ Union is aware of the local sexual health policy, strategy and actions.
This Union Instructs
- The Students’ Union to encourage nightclubs through appropriate channels to incorporate sexual health guidance within their student nights.
- DSU club nights should make free condoms available at all times, DSU affiliates should be encouraged to do the same.
- The Executive member with responsibility for welfare should work with partner organisations and local health authorities in improving sexual health guidance for DMU students.
- The Executive member with responsibility for welfare should work with partner organisations and local health authorities to increase uptake of STI screening amongst students.
- The Executive member with responsibility for welfare to lobby the government on improving the state of national sexual health.
