► About Welfare

DSU Welfare…supporting your education.

First and foremost, we come to University for an education. There are plenty of things to distract us from our studies, such as friends, sports teams, societies, jobs, nightclubs, hobbies, television…the list is endless.

Welfare is sometimes seen as one of those distractions (having to make time to go to the Doctors for example). But it is your welfare that will, above all else, have the biggest impact on your education. Whether this impact is a positive one, or a negative one, is entirely in your hands.

If your in poor physical health, either through not eating the right food or through not getting enough physical activity, you will not be able to study to the best of your ability. Your attention span will be lower and your ability to recall things you heard in a lecture or read in a book will also be affected.
If your laptop is stolen through leaving windows or doors unlocked in your house, you could lose essays, folders or even an entire year’s worth of work.
If you can’t afford to eat because you’ve spent your entire student loan in a week, or you’re caring for two children as a single parent and trying to survive on a student loan whilst cramming in whatever hours you can work between your hectic University schedule, you’re not going to achieve the academic grades you are capable of.

Basically, if you don’t look after yourself you will severely damage your chances of achieving the academic classification you deserve.

But with all the information that gets thrown at you as a student, its sometimes hard to decipher which information is important and which is not. And with coursework to complete and exams to prepare for, who has time to search for the phone number to a complaints department or a website to tell you what that weird rash on your leg is?

Sometimes, ignorance is bliss and its easy to tell yourself that the bad things that can happen to students from time to time (such as robberies, break in’s, outbreaks of meningitis, contracting an STI, catching food poisoning from unhygienic kitchens, being bullied, losing an unhealthy amount of body weight due to stress, getting financially ripped off by landlords or scammed by people on the street) definitely won’t happen to you.

But it’s this sort of thinking that often leads to worse case scenarios.

And that’s why DSU is here, to help you out!

Not only do we have a full time executive officer dedicated to raising awareness of welfare-related issues that are relevant to students, such as mental health or personal safety awareness, but we also have a Welfare & Education Centre who work tirelessly to ensure you’re receiving the support you need to achieve success at University.

If you have a question about anything, and you’re unsure of where to go, the Executive Officers in the Students’ Union will do their utmost to ensure that you get that question answered. If you don’t know where to go for advice, we will endeavour to point you in the right direction. If you want to change something about the students' union, the University or anything else you're passionate about, we are here to help you plan, design and implement the  campaigns you want to run.

Ultimately, we'll do everything we can to help you!
